“One of my biggest influences, the Pulp Era of storytelling and imagery, which is so expressive and rich in how it could transport the reader to other worlds of adventure, fantasy and science fiction. The rare, mundane and exiting met in the pages of all those amazing publications. This section is dedicated to a fragment of my works where I decided to work within this wonderful aesthetic, which I deeply LOVE.”

“Retro” Pulp Series, a collection of paintings
All of these where painted with oils on canvas or canvas paper. In some cases, they were ultimately adapted for ads, posters or postcards, etc.
inspiration…
Deeply rooted in the pulp magazines of the 20s till the 60s and 70s and their amazing and striking imagery and storytelling.
“Astray” drawing
This was the first idea before time after deciding to do it fully with oil paint. Drawing in pencils.
digitally painted, the first, initial concept
first oil colours
Working on the painting and setting the first base colours before the later layers will take place until the painting is completely finished, after setting the initial “dead layer” (or ground colour) which can be seen here under the reds and blues.
Study with pencils on toned paper of the “Yeti” figure before applying it onto the final composition.
Detail of my painting, “Ambushed” where the figure of the “Yeti” is now fully fleshed out.
digital colour
Trying out colour schemes until finding the right tone.
“dead layer” applied onto canvas
First layer of colour (oil painting, very old technique) where all layers are built upon later on until the painting is finished.
Burning targets
Oils on canvas / 50 cm. x 40 cm.
The final poster which was worked as a concept for an independent film project.
- Berlin Postcards -
I was commissioned to do Berlin postcards, but with a Fantasy or Science Fiction themed “twist” and as well in a retro style. So I used different urban landmarks of the City (like the Berliner Dom - Berlin’s Cathedral- , the Brandenburger Tor and the common public area of the Alexanderplatz) with a clear oriented tone. Steampunk, 1950’s “monster attack” and Dieselpunk aesthetics were all my main sources of inspiration. Here some of them:
Rough sketch, first idea for the “Not Enough Time” postcard with a Steampunk style.
First layers of oil paint on canvas for “Attack on the Berliner Dom”.
Colour comp to get a quick idea of the overall colour scheme before painting in oils.
“Dead layer” initial layer of oil pint for what will become the full canvas painting of “After Alexanderplatz”.
Further layers building up the painting for “Attack on the Berliner Dom”.
After Alexanderplatz
Here the final painting in “Dieselpunk” style, with Alexanderplatz (public square) as a background.
Original: Oils on canvas, 60 cm. x 50 cm.

Retro pulp series
I absolutely love this theme and most definitely look forward to continue working in this style. As well working with this clients was a truly great experience of wonderful and constant feedback, where passion for what we were doing was the reigning principle.
